El Efecto de un Durazno
Durante la guerra mundial 2, el ejército italiano tomó a la división de Tom prisionera, y él y sus compañeros fueron trasladados a Italia. Sus captores los hicieron desfilar por la calle y se esforzaron todo lo que pudieron por humillarlos públicamente. Los transeúntes se hicieron cómplices de la humillación, burlándose de ellos, escupiéndoles y ventilando su ira y resentimiento contra ellos.
De golpe, de entre la multitud que los abucheaba, «salió una jovencita, me puso un durazno en la mano y desapareció corriendo antes que tuviera oportunidad de darle las gracias —contó Tom—. Fue el durazno más delicioso que jamás había probado».
Tom debía de tener casi ochenta años; no obstante, los ojos le brillaban mientras relataba la anécdota de la italiana que había tenido ese gesto de bondad con él en una época de profundo odio y enemistad entre dos países en guerra. En aquel momento de ignominia y desesperación, esa chiquilla anónima hizo frente a la presión social y le ofreció un regalo sencillo, sincero, fruto de la compasión. En lugar de considerarlo un soldado de un país enemigo, lo vio como un hombre doliente que necesitaba que lo trataran con amabilidad. El veterano se acordó muchas veces de aquel durazno a lo largo de los duros años que siguieron hasta que la conflagración tocó a su fin, y también después, cada vez que necesitaba fuerzas para aferrarse a la esperanza, para dejar atrás el dolor y el trauma de la guerra y empezar una nueva vida.
Es muy posible que ella asignara escaso valor a su gesto; al fin y al cabo, no era más que un durazno. Seguramente ni soñaba que él recordaría su benevolencia el resto de su vida y que ese pequeño acto se incluiría en un documental que probablemente ha estimulado a otras personas a darlo a conocer.
Promovamos todos la paz entregando duraznos de amor y misericordia, aun cuando eso entrañe riesgos o sea poco convencional, pues las frutas —fuerzas para el desfallecido, alegría para el apesadumbrado, amor para el que sufre de soledad— justifican el costo.

The Power of a Peach
Tom’s division had been captured by the Italian army, and he and his fellow soldiers brought to Italy. Their captors paraded them through the streets and did their best to publicly humiliate them. Passersby joined in, taunting them, spitting at them, and venting their anger and resentment.
Suddenly, from among the jeering crowd, “a young girl stepped out, stuffed a peach into my hand, and then darted away before I could thank her,” Tom recounted. “It was the most delicious peach I had ever eaten.”
The veteran was well into his seventies, but his eyes sparkled as he told the tale of this Italian girl who had shown him kindness during a time of deep hatred and enmity between the two warring countries. In his hour of shame and despair, this nameless girl defied social pressure to reach out with a simple, sincere gift of compassion. She looked beyond his status as a soldier of an enemy country and saw him as a hurting human being in need of kindness. He remembered that peach through the tough years that followed as the war slowly drew to an end, and later whenever he needed strength to hold on to hope, to leave the hurt and pain of the war behind, and to start a new life.
She probably thought little of her deed; it was “only” a peach, after all. She probably never dreamed that he would cherish her benevolence for the rest of his life, and that the story would be featured in a documentary that has probably inspired others to pass this story on.
May we make peace by sharing “peaches” of love and mercy, even when it is risky or unconventional, for the fruit—the weary souls strengthened, the sad hearts gladdened, the lonely ones loved—is well worth the cost.
