Christian Principles for Kids: Discipleship
A disciple is defined as a “follower of Jesus,” “a learner,” “one who follows in the master’s footsteps,” “someone who is aiming to be like Jesus.” Disciples seek to learn, study, and then follow and apply what their teacher tells them.
We are students of Jesus—our Master. We seek to not only learn about His life on earth, the truths of God’s Word, and His nature and character, but we seek to follow His example and to live as He taught us to live, to love as He loved, and to live a life of faith.
What should we strive to be like? The following Bible passage provides some insight:
“The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22–23).
The Sermon on the Mount also serves as a guide, as Jesus highlights as blessed those who are merciful, meek, and peacemakers, and those who hunger and thirst after righteousness (Matthew 5:3–9).
Discipleship is a spiritual journey, a faith journey. It involves daily choices and actions to operate under the influence of the Holy Spirit and God’s love, to obey Him to the best of our ability, to testify of His love through our words and actions.

Un discípulo es un seguidor de Jesús, un aprendiz, uno que sigue las pisadas de su maestro, uno que aspira a ser como Jesús. Un discípulo desea estudiar, aprender y a continuación seguir y aplicar lo que su profesor le enseña.
Nosotros somos pupilos de Jesús; Él es nuestro Maestro. No solo ansiamos conocer cómo fue Su vida en la Tierra, cuáles son las verdades contenidas en la Palabra de Dios y cuál es Su naturaleza y forma de ser, sino que también anhelamos seguir Su ejemplo y conducirnos como Él nos ha enseñado, amar como Él amó y vivir conforme a la fe.
¿Cómo debemos aspirar a ser? Los siguientes pasajes de la Biblia nos dan algunas luces:
«Este es el fruto que el Espíritu produce en nosotros: amor, gozo, paz, paciencia, benignidad, bondad, fidelidad, humildad y dominio propio» (Gálatas 5:22,23)
El Sermón de la Montaña también nos sirve de guía. En él Jesús resalta que bienaventurados son los misericordiosos, los mansos y los pacificadores, amén de los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia. (Mateo 5:3-9)
Ser discípulo se trata de una travesía espiritual, un viaje de fe. Requiere decisiones y acciones cotidianas con el fin de obrar bajo la influencia del Espíritu Santo y del amor de Dios, obedecerlo lo mejor posible, y dar testimonio de Su amor mediante nuestras palabras y acciones.

Dios siempre ha existido como tres personas que conforman un solo ser, cada una distinta de la otra: el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo.
Hay versículos en el Antiguo Testamento que infieren que existe más de una persona en Dios.
Génesis 1:26-27 – Luego Dios dijo: «Ahora hagamos al ser humano a nuestra imagen y semejanza». … Así que Dios creó al ser humano a su imagen y semejanza, creó al varón y a la mujer.
Isaías 6:8 – Y oí la voz del Señor que decía: … ¿Quién irá por nosotros?
La noción de las tres personas en un solo Dios quedó clara en el Nuevo Testamento a raíz de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Cristo, y el derramamiento del Espíritu Santo sobre los creyentes. Los seguidores de Jesús llegaron a entender que Jesús es Dios, pero que es un ser distinto o separado de Dios, y que el Espíritu Santo también es Dios, pero a su vez un ser distinto o separado del Padre y del Hijo.
Para nosotros los seres humanos es imposible entender plenamente el concepto de que Padre, Hijo y Espíritu Santo constituyen un solo Dios. Puede ser desconcertante, mas por otra parte concuerda con nuestra creencia de que existe un Dios todopoderoso y omnisciente.
A medida que se nos revela el concepto de la Trinidad, es lógico que algunos aspectos de su identidad sobrepasen nuestra experiencia y entendimiento humanos. Por eso, no te preocupes si no alcanzas a comprenderlo del todo. Lo importante es saber que Dios es uno solo, que a ese Dios lo conforman tres Personas, que Dios te ama, que Jesús murió por tu salvación y que el Espíritu Santo está siempre a tu lado en calidad de ayudante y consejero.

God has always existed as three persons in one being, each distinct from the other, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
There are Old Testament verses which infer that there is more than one person in God.
Genesis 1:26-27 – Then God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. … So God created human beings in his own image. He created them to be like himself. He created them male and female.
Isaiah 6:8 – Then I heard the Lord asking, … “Who will go for us?”
The understanding of the three persons in one God became clearer in the New Testament because of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the believers. The followers of Jesus came to understand that Jesus is God, but He is distinct from the Father, and that the Holy Spirit is also God, but is distinct from the Father and the Son.
The concept of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit being one God is impossible for us as humans to completely understand. That might be disconcerting, but it’s also consistent with our belief that an all-powerful, all-knowing creator God exists.
As God reveals Himself to us, it stands to reason that understanding some aspects of Him might be beyond our human experience and understanding. So if you feel you can’t fully understand this, don’t worry about it. The important things are to know that there is one God, that there are three Persons in God, that God loves you and Jesus died for your salvation, and that the Holy Spirit is with you as a helper and counselor.
