Jesus gave us the key to true purpose and harmony when He said, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”(Matthew 22:39) What does that mean, in practical, everyday terms? One of the best explanations ever given is found in the Bible’s “love chapter,” 1 Corinthians 13. Times and terms may have changed, but the underlying principles are as true as ever. Ejercicio espiritual: Mensajes del Cielo
En la Biblia, el primer libro de los Reyes narra la historia del profeta Elías. El capítulo 19 relata un tumultuoso episodio en el que huyó para ponerse a salvo de la malvada reina Jezabel y se ocultó en el desierto. Al cabo de un tiempo, Dios le indicó que se trasladara al monte Horeb. Allí le dijo que saliera de la cueva en la que se había refugiado y se presentara delante de Él. Un fuerte viento azotó la montaña y desmenuzó unas piedras cercanas; luego sobrevino un terremoto, seguido de un fuego; finalmente se oyó un «silbo apacible y delicado». Dios no estaba en el viento, ni en el terremoto, ni en el fuego; pero sí era Suyo aquel suave murmullo.
Tú también puedes recogerte y pasar un rato a solas con Dios. En Su presencia oirás Su voz y recibirás Sus palabras de amor y aliento, respuestas a tus interrogantes y soluciones a tus problemas. Se hace así:
Busca un lugar tranquilo donde nadie te vaya a molestar. Lo ideal es retirarte por un mínimo de 15 minutos. Lleva una Biblia o alguna lectura inspirativa, y también un computador portátil, o bien lápiz y papel.
Comienza leyendo uno o dos pasajes breves para infundirte fe. Luego piensa en algún interrogante que quieras que Dios te aclare; o en algún problema o inquietud sobre el que deseas que te hable. Puede ser algo que simplemente suscite tu curiosidad. Permanece en silencio y escucha lo que te diga. Quizá te recuerde algo que has leído en Su Palabra, o te traiga a la memoria algo que has visto o escuchado, o te dé un mensaje en palabras o en imágenes. Escribe lo que te venga al pensamiento para poder referirte a ello más adelante. Finalmente, agradécele que te haya hablado.

A Spiritual Exercise: Hear from Heaven
The Bible’s book of 1 Kings includes the story of the prophet Elijah. Chapter 19 recounts the tumultuous episode when he was running for his life from wicked Queen Jezebel and hiding in the wilderness. After a while God led Elijah to go to Mount Horeb. There God told Elijah to leave the cave where he had taken refuge and stand before Him. A strong wind tore into the mountain and broke nearby rocks in pieces; then there was an earthquake; then a fire; then a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:3-12). God was not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire, but that still small voice was His.
You too can get alone with God to hear His voice and thereby receive His words of love and encouragement, answers to your questions, and solutions to your problems. Here’s how:
Find a quiet place where you won’t be disturbed, preferably for at least 15 minutes. Bring your Bible or some other inspirational reading, and a laptop or a pen and something to write on.
Begin by reading a short passage or two to boost your faith. Then think about a matter that you would like God to speak to you about—a problem or concern or even something that you’re curious about. Sit quietly and listen to what He tells you. Perhaps He’ll remind you of something you have read in His Word. Perhaps He’ll remind you of something you have seen or something someone has said. Or perhaps He’ll give you a message in words or pictures. Whatever comes to your mind, write it down for future reference, and then thank Him for speaking.

El amor lo conquista todo
Sir Ernest Shackleton, el famoso explorador de la Antártida, relató una vez que cierta noche, en una choza que habían armado de urgencia, él y sus hombres intentaban dormir habiendo racionado ya las últimas galletas que les quedaban. La situación era extrema. Ninguno de ellos tenía asegurado su retorno a la civilización.
Shackleton percibió un movimiento. Notó que uno de sus hombres se daba vuelta para ver cómo estaban capeando los demás el difícil momento. Seguro de que todos menos él dormían, estiró el brazo por encima del hombre que tenía al lado y tomó su bolsa de galletas. Shackleton quedó petrificado. Confiaba tanto en ese hombre que habría puesto su vida en manos de él. Y, sin embargo, le estaba robando la última galleta a otro hombre. ¿La presión lo había hecho ladrón?
Enseguida lo vio moverse de nuevo. Sacó la galleta de su propia bolsa, puso las dos en la bolsa del otro hombre y sin hacer ruido puso nuevamente la bolsa al lado de su amigo que seguía durmiendo. Shackleton dijo: «No me atrevo a revelar el nombre de ese tipo. Sentí que aquel acto era un secreto entre él y Dios».
¿Hasta qué punto te sacrificarías para demostrar amor a los que te rodean?

Love Conquers All
Sir Ernest Shackleton, the famous Antarctic explorer, once described how, one night, in an emergency hut, he and his men were trying to sleep, having just rationed out the last biscuits. The situation was dire, and no one there could be sure he’d make it back to civilization.
Shackleton sensed a movement and saw one of the men turning to see how the others were faring. He obviously thought that everyone else was asleep, so he stretched over his neighbor and took his biscuit bag. Shackleton was dumbfounded. He thought he could have trusted this man with his life. Now he was stealing a man’s last biscuit. Had the pressure turned him into a thief?
Then he saw him move again. He removed the biscuit from his own bag, put both biscuits into the other man’s bag, and quietly returned the bag to his sleeping friend’s side. Shackleton said, “I dare not tell you that man’s name. I felt that act was a secret between himself and God.”
What would you be willing to do to show love to those around you?
Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends – Jesus (John 15:13)
